Australian horses have really made this race thier own since 2003 when Choisir won the race , with Takeover Target and Miss Andretti also winning the race in 2006 and 2007 respectively.

I had a lovely day at the Hancox Sydnicate Day at Geelong on Saturday. It was great to finally meet the Syndicate Managers, Shelley and Rod, but best of all it was wonderful to see the horses in our syndicate.

The Choisir colt and Testa Rossa gelding are physically very impressive individuals. Both are big horses; the Testa Rossa is more soldily built, and the Choisir is finer and marginally taller. The Falbrav and Commands colts are not as forward as the other colts, but it has always been expected they would be more late 2yo/3yo types.

The Hussonet filly is the smallest of the group. She is very sweet and pretty, and to my eye still has some maturing to do.

Once I get the photos off the camera, I’ll upload the best of them to my website.

A most enjoyable day was topped off by picking all 8 winners on the card (YAY!)

What a lovely day yesterday at Morphettville yesterday for the Melbourne Cup Day meeting.

Race 1 had a omen bet for me with “Vaugirard” a son of a mare called “Basenji” who was herself by a horse called “Lion Hunter”. He did not win but finished a nice second.

Then in the second race, I was thrilled to see that one of the starters was out of Smilingly – the same mother as my Hussonet filly! His name was Fine Spirit had he was a lovely bay gelding by Bel Esprit.

He too ran well finishing second, coming across a more seasoned campaigner that was just better than him on the day.

Here is a photo I took of Fine Spirit in the mounting yard:

Fine Spirit in the mounting yard @ Morphettville

It was really nice to meet their breeder over by the stables, and I am sure that we will keep in touch – especially once the Hussonet filly comes into training!

It was an enoyable day, backing a couple of nice winners and it was great to see expatriate South Australian Bart Cummings win his 12th Melbourne Cup with Viewed.
